KABUL, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- At least four miners died from carbon monoxide poisoning in a precious and semi-precious stones mine in Khash district of northern Badakhshan province on Friday, provincial police spokesman Ehsanullah Kamgar confirmed.

The tragedy occurred on Friday afternoon when toxic gas accumulated inside the underground workings, suffocating the workers, Kamgar said.

The bodies of the deceased have since been recovered and handed over to their families, according to the official.

The incident is the latest in a series of fatal mining accidents in the province. In October 2025, two gold miners lost their lives when a tunnel collapsed in another mine in Badakhshan province.

Such frequent fatalities are attributed to unregulated mining practices, inadequate safety equipment, and the use of unskilled labor in the extraction of the country's valuable underground resources.
