OUAGADOUGOU, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) on Thursday condemned the U.S. intervention in Venezuela, which led to the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife.
This "grave act" runs counter to international law, particularly the fundamental principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter, according to a statement signed by Burkina Faso President Ibrahim Traore, who also serves as president of the confederation.
The confederation said that the use of armed force by one state against the sovereignty, territorial integrity or political independence of another state constitutes unacceptable interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state and an act of aggression.
It also called on the UN Security Council to fully assume its responsibilities by clearly condemning the U.S. military action and working toward the restoration of international legality.
Reaffirming its commitment to a world order based on respect and the sovereign equality of states, the confederation expressed its solidarity with the Venezuelan people, "whose sovereignty has been trampled upon by this act of aggression." ■
