JAKARTA, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia has established a special task force to accelerate post-disaster rehabilitation and reconstruction in three provinces on Sumatra Island, a senior official said on Thursday.

Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto appointed Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian as head of the task force.

Prasetyo said the appointment reflects the broad scope of disaster-affected areas, which include the provinces of Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra, as well as the need for strong coordination among regional governments.

According to Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency, floods and landslides that struck the three Sumatra provinces in late November 2025 claimed over 1,170 lives.

Prasetyo added that the task force has been instructed to act swiftly in accordance with established recovery phases, with a priority placed on constructing adequate housing for displaced residents.
