KABUL, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan's state-owned power company, Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), has signed contracts for 1,250 megawatts of electricity generation from domestic sources during 2025, the company announced on Thursday.
The agreements encompass power production from coal, wind, hydropower, natural gas, and solar sources across multiple provinces, DABS managing director Abdul Bari Omar stated during the groundbreaking ceremony for a 34-MW solar project at the Kabul Green Industrial Park.
In a related development underscoring efforts to reduce reliance on imported electricity, Afghan authorities inaugurated a 22.75-MW solar power plant on the eastern outskirts of Kabul on Tuesday.
Currently, Afghanistan generates around 600 MW from domestic sources, covering approximately 30 percent of national consumption. The remaining 70 percent is imported from neighboring countries, including Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, and Turkmenistan. ■
