COLOMBO, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's Disaster Management Center (DMC) said on Wednesday that it is preparing for any emergency as a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a depression within the next 12 hours.

DMC Director Pradeep Kodippili said several areas that were severely affected by Cyclone Ditwah are expected to experience heavy rainfall in the coming days.

He said heavy thundershowers are also expected over the sea areas around Sri Lanka, adding that fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing out to sea.

Also on Wednesday, Sri Lanka's National Building Research Organization issued level 3 landslide evacuation warnings, the highest level in the country's warning system, to three areas in Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts, as signs of potential landslides have been observed in these areas.
