SYDNEY, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Thirteen people have been injured, including one man hospitalized in a serious condition, after a truck collided with five vehicles at a major road connecting the city of Wollongong and southwest Sydney on Wednesday.

Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) quoted Norm Rees from the ambulance service in the state of New South Wales (NSW) as saying that emergency services were called to the scene around midday local time.

Rees said that a man driving a four-wheel drive had suffered a medical episode and veered onto the wrong side of the road. A semi-trailer in the opposite direction took evasive action, but clipped it and hit a guard rail, jackknifing across the busy arterial road and colliding with five cars in total.

Thirteen people were assessed by paramedics at the scene, with five transported to the hospital. Rees said a 38-year-old male driver of one of the cars was the most seriously injured and transported to the hospital by air.
