GAZA/JERUSALEM, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- At least four Palestinians were killed and two others wounded on Monday in an Israeli airstrike on a tent sheltering displaced people in southern Gaza, according to Palestinian medical sources and eyewitnesses.

Eyewitnesses said an Israeli drone fired two missiles at the tent in the Al-Qarara area, northwest of Khan Younis. The wounded were taken to Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis for treatment, medical sources told Xinhua.

Earlier in the day, Israeli warplanes struck Khan Younis and Rafah in southern Gaza, as well as areas near the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza, according to local sources.

The sources said Israeli forces also carried out demolition operations on residential buildings on Gaza's eastern outskirts and shelled several areas under their control.

The Israel Defense Forces said in a statement Monday that it struck "in accordance with the ceasefire agreement" a Hamas militant who was planning "an imminent attack" against Israeli troops in southern Gaza.

"Troops in the Southern Command remain deployed and will continue to operate to remove any immediate threat," it said.

On Monday, the Government Operations Room for Emergency Interventions in the Gaza Strip and the Palestinian Ministry of Public Works and Housing launched a "Right To Shelter Gaza" campaign, calling on the international community to pressure Israel to allow the entry of mobile homes as urgent humanitarian aid.

Separately, Gaza-based health authorities said on Monday that two Palestinians were killed in the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll since the Israel-Hamas ceasefire took effect on Oct. 10, 2025 to 422. The four Palestinians killed earlier on Monday are not included in this count.

Since the outbreak of the war in the Gaza Strip on Oct. 7, 2023, a total of 71,388 Palestinians have been killed and 171,269 others wounded, according to the authorities.
