ADDIS ABABA, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- The National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) has launched a digital platform to modernize voter and candidate registration for the country's upcoming general elections, scheduled for mid-2026.

The newly-launched digital comprehensive platform, featuring mobile and web-based applications, reflects the NEBE's wider initiative to modernize the East African country's electoral system through the application of modern technologies, the state-run Ethiopian News Agency reported on Monday.

Addressing the launching event, NEBE Chairperson Melatwork Hailu said that the digital registration system will improve efficiency and data accuracy, and enhance inclusivity in compliance with international electoral standards, while also reducing operational expenses.

According to the NEBE, candidate registration will be fully digital, while voter registration will combine technological and traditional methods.

Designed to allow remote registration regardless of location, the NEBE said the platform marks "a major milestone in Ethiopia's electoral history, as it is the first time the country is fully integrating digital technology into the election process."

Ethiopia's seventh general election, scheduled for June 1, will mainly elect members of the Ethiopian House of Peoples' Representatives, the lower chamber of the parliament.

According to Ethiopia's Federal Supreme Court, the use of technology in elections is crucial for enhancing transparency and public trust, reducing costs, saving time, and reducing bureaucratic obstacles, while urging public awareness for effective use of the new system.

Ethiopia holds general elections every five years.
