DAR ES SALAAM, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) on Tuesday announced the resumption of cross-border passenger train services between Tanzania and Zambia, effective Feb. 10.

According to a statement issued by TAZARA, the move aims to restore seamless rail connectivity between the two countries following the suspension of cross-border passenger services in June 2024 due to technical and operational challenges.

The statement said the resumption also reaffirms TAZARA's founding mandate to promote regional mobility, trade, tourism and people-to-people exchanges.

It added that the restart of passenger services forms part of a reorganization of passenger operations aimed at ensuring inclusivity, sustainability, and service reliability within existing operational capacities.

"This resumption is about restoring confidence in cross-border rail travel through a more focused, reliable, and sustainable passenger service," said Bruno Ching'andu, managing director and chief executive officer of TAZARA.

He said the service will be further enhanced through the planned acquisition of new passenger coaches and locomotives dedicated to passenger operations, which is expected to increase the number of train journeys and improve the overall customer experience.
