MADRID, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Thousands of people gathered outside the U.S. Embassy in Madrid on Sunday to protest against a U.S. military strike in Venezuela and the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro a day earlier.

The demonstration drew large numbers of Latin American immigrants and their descendants living in Madrid, as well as local Spanish residents. Protesters waved the national flags of various Latin American countries and held anti-U.S. banners, chanting slogans such as "No to imperialist aggression," "U.S. out of Latin America," and "You are the real terrorists," expressing strong opposition to the Donald Trump administration's actions.

The protest was organized by the Plataforma de Solidaridad con Venezuela Bolivariana, which issued a statement on the same day condemning the U.S. military operation in Caracas as a "criminal attack" and describing it as an "illegal and unjustified aggression against Venezuela's sovereignty."

Ione Belarra, former Spanish Minister for Social Rights and Agenda 2030 and a leader of the Podemos party, also attended the demonstration. She publicly criticized U.S. actions in Venezuela, calling them an "imperialist aggression against Venezuela and Latin America."

Belarra urged the Spanish government and the European Commission to "isolate Donald Trump internationally" and to "cut all ties with the United States," according to local media reports.
