SYDNEY, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- Police in Sydney are investigating after a man died in a house fire in the city's southwest in the early hours of Saturday morning, with local media reporting the incident occurred at a disability support home.
The police force in the state of New South Wales (NSW) said that emergency services were called to the fire in Spring Farm, 50 km southwest of central Sydney, around 12:25 a.m. local time on Saturday.
Fire and rescue personnel attended the scene and extinguished the fire, but the home was destroyed and a body was located inside.
Police said that two other occupants present at the time were able to evacuate and were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported that the property was a disability support home.
Two people with disabilities were being cared for at the property at the time of the fire, according to the ABC, one of whom is believed to be the deceased.
Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said at a press conference on Saturday that the fire is not being treated as suspicious but was extremely intense.
"The fire has got up into the roof area quickly and tore through it, tore across the top, we've had significant roof collapse," he said
Dewberry said that the reason why one person was unable to escape the home would form part of the investigation into the fire. ■
