BEIRUT/JERUSALEM, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Israeli warplanes carried out Friday a series of airstrikes on several areas in southern Lebanon, according to official and security sources.

"Israeli warplanes launched an aerial assault, carrying out a series of violent airstrikes targeting the Aqmata Plain and the outskirts of al-Rayhan in the Jabal al-Rayhan area," Lebanon's official National News Agency reported.

It added that a few minutes later, another wave of violent airstrikes hit the area between the village of Ansar and the town of Zrarieh, using multiple air-to-ground missiles.

The valleys located between the villages of Kafrwa and Aazza in the Nabatieh District were also subjected to three hostile airstrikes.

A source from Lebanese army intelligence, along with eyewitnesses, told Xinhua, "Israeli warplanes carried out about twenty airstrikes today on areas containing sites belonging to Lebanon's Hezbollah."

"The Israeli warplanes launched more than 35 air-to-ground missiles, causing massive explosions whose echoes reverberated across most areas of the south," the source added.

Meanwhile, Avichay Adraee, the Israeli army's spokesperson, said on X that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) carried out strikes on "terrorist" Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon.

"The IDF targeted a training compound that was being used by the Radwan Force unit to conduct training for its operatives to plan and carry out terrorist plots against IDF forces and citizens of the State of Israel. The terrorist operatives were undergoing firearms training and instruction in the use of various combat means," Adraee said.

A ceasefire agreement between Hezbollah and Israel has been in force since Nov. 27, 2024. Despite the deal, Israel has continued to carry out occasional strikes in Lebanon, saying they are aimed at eliminating Hezbollah threats.
