COLOMBO, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka Customs has generated 2.497 trillion rupees (8.06 billion U.S. dollars) in revenue so far in 2025, marking the highest collection recorded by the department and placing it well above its revised annual target.

Chandana Punchihewa, director of Customs and Media Spokesperson, said the original revenue target set by the Ministry of Finance for 2025 was 2.115 trillion rupees. Collections reached that level ahead of schedule, prompting authorities to revise the target upward to 2.231 trillion rupees. Current revenue has now exceeded that revised benchmark as well.

Addressing the media, Punchihewa said the strong performance was supported by a combination of operational measures introduced by Sri Lanka Customs and the reopening of vehicle imports, which had a notable impact on collections.

He noted that the revenue target for the previous year stood at 1.531 trillion rupees, while the significantly higher target for 2025 was set following policy decisions related to import controls, particularly the resumption of vehicle imports. (1 Sri Lankan rupee equals 0.0032 U.S. dollars)
