JUBA, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) on Friday strongly condemned the killing of one of its staff in Wau, Western Bahr el Ghazal State.
In a statement issued in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, the UN mission said a staff member had been reportedly detained by security actors since Monday, during which time it was engaging with the relevant authorities to locate the individual and ensure his safe release.
"We are devastated by the loss of our colleague," UNMISS Officer-in-Charge Anita Kiki Gbeho said in the statement.
Gbeho said such killing of UN personnel is unacceptable and called for an immediate and thorough investigation to determine the circumstances of his detention and subsequent death.
The UN official also called on the authorities to ensure those responsible are held to account. "It is imperative that the safety and security of United Nations personnel is respected," she added. ■
