MEXICO CITY, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- Trinidad and Tobago has approved the transit of U.S. military aircraft through its airports in the coming weeks, the country's foreign ministry said on Monday.

The United States has advised that these movements are logistical in nature, facilitating supply replenishment and routine personnel rotations, said the ministry in a statement.

The statement reaffirms the government's "commitment to sustained cooperation with the United States of America in advancing regional safety, security, and stability."

It noted that through this partnership, Trinidad and Tobago has benefited from joint military training exercises, enhanced surveillance capabilities, including the installation of an effective radar system, and collaborative efforts that have contributed to the interdiction of millions of dollars' worth of illegal narcotics.

The Pentagon has carried out strikes on alleged drug vessels in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific Ocean since September, killing more than 80 people aboard. Washington has deployed a fleet of warships near Venezuela, including the world's largest aircraft carrier, and about 15,000 troops to the Caribbean Sea.

In October, an American warship docked in Trinidad and Tobago's capital, Port of Spain, as the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump boosted military pressure on Venezuela and its President Nicolas Maduro.
