NEW DELHI, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from Tuesday's multi-vehicle collision has risen to 15, with around 48 people injured, local police confirmed by phone.

Up to seven buses and three cars were involved in the pileup amid heavy fog. The collision immediately caused the vehicles to catch fire, resulting in numerous casualties.

Only three of the bodies have been identified so far, although efforts were underway to contact the families of all the deceased and injured.

"The dead bodies are burnt beyond recognition," a local cop told Xinhua over the phone, adding that all the bodies had been shifted to a mortuary and a few of the injured were in critical condition.

According to him, the buses and other vehicles that caught fire were en route from Delhi to different destinations, including areas in the eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
