BAGHDAD, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- Iraq's Federal Supreme Court on Sunday ratified the final results of the 2025 parliamentary elections, a key step toward forming a new government.
A statement by the highest constitutional judicial body in Iraq confirmed that the election process met all constitutional and legal requirements.
The ratification follows the Nov. 11 elections, after which the ruling Shiite Coordination Framework declared it had formed the largest bloc in the 329-member parliament, winning the decisive constitutional right to nominate the next prime minister.
Following the ratification decision, the Iraqi president is now constitutionally required to summon the new parliament to convene within 15 days. The new Council of Representatives will then proceed to take the constitutional oath and elect a new speaker.
The parliament will then vote on the new president. By the terms of the ethno-sectarian power-sharing system adopted after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, the presidency is reserved for a Kurd, the parliament speaker's post for a Sunni Muslim, and the prime minister's office for a Shiite Muslim. ■
