RIYADH, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- The 11th Global Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) opened here on Sunday, emphasizing the fostering of mutual respect and understanding among civilizations and cultures.

Under the theme "UNAOC: Two Decades of Dialogue for Humanity -- Advancing a New Era of Mutual Respect and Understanding in a Multipolar World," the two-day event drew UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, High Representative for UNAOC Miguel Angel Moratinos, political and religious leaders, heads of international organizations, and representatives of civil society.

"It is profoundly fitting that we gather in this land ... to advance the cause of global interfaith dialogue," Guterres said in his opening speech.

"It is pivotal for forging sustainable peace. No more 7th of Octobers. No more Gazas destroyed. No more El-Fashers starved. No more communities massacred, expelled, or scapegoated," he added. "It's time to end the vicious cycle of death and destruction."

In his address, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud stressed Saudi Arabia's continued support for UN efforts to promote dialogue, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence among civilizations and cultures.

The forum provides an important opportunity to review efforts and exchange ideas on managing diversity and differences by building bridges of communication and dialogue among civilizations and religions, the Saudi minister noted.

According to a UN statement, the forum, comprising thematic sessions and group meetings, will serve as "an opportune occasion" to commemorate the 20th anniversary of UNAOC and chart its future course in the pursuit of lasting peace.
