BAGHDAD, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- A village chieftain in Iraq's central province of Salahuddin was killed by the Islamic State (IS) extremist group, local authorities said on Friday.

The victim, Fakhri al-Abbasi, was killed "in a cowardly terrorist attack," the media office of Salahuddin's governor said in a statement.

According to the Kurdish media network Rudaw, al-Abbasi was a Sunni from the Samarra district, whose family had also been targeted by IS in previous attacks.

"All members of his family, except for one son, were killed by IS" in earlier assaults, Kawa Shekhani, advisor to the governor of Salahuddin, was quoted by Rudaw as saying.

Iraq declared victory over IS in 2017, but remnants of the group continue to carry out attacks against security forces and civilians in the country.
