MOSCOW, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Twenty-three tank cars carrying fuel oil derailed on Saturday at Chais station in Russia's Penza Oblast, causing an oil spill that has contaminated an estimated 750 square meters, Russian Railways (RZD) said on Telegram.
According to RZD, the oil spill has been contained to an area adjacent to the railway embankment, with emergency response measures being taken to limit environmental impact.
Specialists from RZD's environmental laboratory, together with experts from the emergency response organization Ecospas, have been dispatched to the site to assess and address the contamination, the company said.
RZD added that service at Chais station has been suspended.
Earlier reports said the derailment occurred when a shunting locomotive collided with a freight train. No casualties were reported.
The Federal Passenger Company, a RZD subsidiary, said the accident has delayed six passenger trains in Penza. ■
