TOKYO, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- A train on the Akita Nairiku Line derailed in the northern Japanese prefecture of Akita early Friday, and one man, believed to be the driver, was rescued, local media reported.

A railway employee made an emergency call at around 6:50 a.m. local time, reporting that a train had derailed and overturned near Kayakusa Station in the city of Kitaakita, Akita Prefecture, the Asahi Shimbun reported.

According to the Kitaakita City Fire Department and police, there was one person, believed to be the driver, inside the train. There are no reports of any passengers, and no other injuries have been confirmed.

The driver, who was able to speak when rescued, sustained injuries, the report said.

The single-car rapid train bound for Kakunodate Town is believed to have hit a fallen tree, causing it to derail and overturn shortly thereafter, the report said.
