TOKYO, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks edged up Tuesday as caution prevailed ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve's two-day policy meeting.

The benchmark Nikkei stock index, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, ended up 73.16 points, or 0.14 percent, from Monday at 50,655.10.

The broader Topix index, meanwhile, finished 0.61 point, or 0.02 percent, higher at 3,384.92.

The yen weakened to the 156 level against the U.S. dollar on Tuesday after a powerful earthquake in northeastern Japan late Monday night slightly dented expectations that the Bank of Japan will hike interest rates next week, analysts said.

On the stock market, trading was mostly directionless as investors adopted a wait-and-see stance before the Fed policy meeting starting Tuesday.
