DAMASCUS, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- Syria's interim authorities staged a major military parade in the capital, Damascus, on Monday to mark the first anniversary of the country's political transition.

The event took place along the Mazzeh Highway in western Damascus, where lines of soldiers and military units stretched for nearly three kilometers, forming one of the largest military displays seen in the capital in recent years.

The parade also featured a military paragliding performance, with aircraft flying over central Damascus in synchronized formations as crowds gathered along the main road to watch.

In several Syrian cities, public squares were decorated with banners and flags, while performances and public gatherings were held to mark what the authorities describe as the beginning of a new political chapter for the country, SANA added.

Syria entered a political transition in December 2024 following the collapse of the former government after years of conflict. The interim authorities say their goals include national reconciliation, restructuring state institutions, and facilitating the return of refugees and internally displaced Syrians.

Over the past year, the country has witnessed a gradual reopening of public institutions, a partial return of services in major cities, and diplomatic outreach with regional and international actors.

However, large parts of the country continue to face reconstruction challenges, particularly in areas heavily damaged during the conflict, while security incidents along border regions persist.
