ISLAMABAD, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani authorities have thwarted an attempt to smuggle a large consignment of stimulant tablets worth nearly 299.8 million rupees (about 1.08 million U.S. dollars) in the southern Sindh province, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) said on Friday.

Officials of the Airport Cargo Control Unit at the Karachi International Mail Office seized 9,455 MDMA (ecstasy) tablets during a targeted inspection of an inbound parcel from Germany, the FBR said in a statement.

The narcotics were concealed inside speakers and LED lamps, while the shipment was falsely declared as containing clothes, socks, and music boxes.

Customs authorities have launched an investigation to identify the intended recipients and facilitators involved in the smuggling attempt, it added.
