KABUL, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Afghan police in Badakhshan province said on Thursday that they had arrested four suspected drug smugglers and seized quantities of narcotics in two separate operations.
In the first operation conducted in Khash district, police intercepted a vehicle loaded with raw hashish and took two individuals into custody on charges of attempting to smuggle the substance, the statement said.
In the second operation carried out in Jurm district, police discovered 2 kg of hashish along with toxic materials commonly used in the production of illicit drugs. Two men were detained at the scene for further investigation, according to the statement.
Badakhshan, a mountainous province in northeast Afghanistan, has been a longstanding transit point for illegal drug trafficking due to its rugged terrain and limited infrastructure. ■
