KABUL, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- The expansion of poultry farms has created job opportunities for about 15,000 people in Afghanistan's western Herat province and helped the region achieve self-sufficiency in chicken meat, local media reported Wednesday.
A total of 800 poultry farms are currently operational in Herat province, which produce 2.5 million eggs daily, the official Radio and Television of Afghanistan (RTA) said in a report, citing figures from the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock.
So far, 120 million U.S. dollars had been invested in the poultry sector in Herat and its vicinity, the report said.
Afghanistan has a total of around 14,000 poultry farms across the country. Although there has been an expansion of the poultry industry in recent years, the country still imports chicken meat from neighboring states. ■
