KABUL, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan has exported nearly 40,000 tons of dried figs from the southern Kandahar province to global markets so far this year, marking a sharp increase from last year's figures, the state-owned Bakhtar news agency said Friday.

According to the report, the figs were exported primarily to several countries, including China, the United Arab Emirates, Britain, Canada, India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Germany this year. This represents a significant increase compared to the 13,205 tons of figs exported last year.

Figs, both fresh and dried, have been a main export item for Afghanistan over the past several years.

Kandahar is one of Afghanistan's key producers of high-quality figs, a crop that plays an important role in local farmers' income and the province's agricultural economy. Afghanistan hopes to further expand access to global markets as part of its efforts to boost agricultural exports.
