CANBERRA, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Australia's greenhouse gas emissions fell by 2.2 percent in the 12 months to June 2025 as renewable electricity generation hit a new record-high, according to government data.

The latest quarterly update on Australia's greenhouse gas inventory, which was published on Thursday by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW), revealed that the nation produced 437.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in the year to June.

The figure represents a fall of 9.9 million tonnes, or 2.2 percent, from the preceding 12 months.

It means that Australia has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 28.5 percent since 2005, the baseline year for the nation's 2030 emissions reduction target of 43 percent.

The DCCEEW report said that electricity emissions were down 3.3 percent, or 5.0 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, in the year to June and have fallen by 30.3 percent from the peak recorded in the 12 months to June 2009.

It said that total renewable electricity generation increased by 10.6 percent between June 2024 and June 2025 as a result of record levels of grid-scale solar generation and high wind-powered generation.

Renewables contributed a record-high 41.2 percent of total generation to the National Electricity Market over the 12-month period, up from 38.1 percent in the year to June 2024.

Transport emissions rose by 0.3 percent in the year to June 2025, which the DCCEEW said was driven by increases in diesel consumption for road transport and domestic aviation activity.

Preliminary data for the year to September 2025, also published on Thursday, showed that emissions were down 2.8 percent over the 12 months.
