BERLIN, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Serhou Guirassy scored twice as Borussia Dortmund cruised to a 4-0 home victory over Villarreal in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday.
Despite Dortmund's control in possession, clear-cut chances were rare in the opening phases, and it was Villarreal which created the first moments of danger. Tajon Buchanan thought he had found the net in the 11th minute, but his effort was ruled out for offside. Villarreal continued to threaten on the counter-attack, with both Buchanan and Pape Gueye missing promising opportunities.
The hosts broke the deadlock in first-half stoppage time, as Guirassy headed a corner into the net to give Dortmund a 1-0 lead at the interval.
The turning point came early in the second half, when Villarreal defender Juan Foyth was sent off after blocking a goal-bound effort with his arm inside the box. Guirassy saw his initial penalty saved, but reacted fastest to convert the rebound and double Dortmund's advantage.
Karim Adeyemi added a third in the 58th minute, benefiting from a deflected clearance that looped into the net. Dortmund remained in control and won the game comfortably, with Daniel Svensson's stoppage-time header from close range completing the scoring.
"We obviously benefited from the red card. We came out well after the break and allowed very little. Especially in the second half, we played very well," Dortmund captain Nico Schlotterbeck said.
The win moves Dortmund to 10 points after five matches and strengthens its position in the race for the knockout stages. ■
