NEW DELHI, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- At least three people were killed Thursday after a pickup truck carrying them collided with a train in the northeastern state of Tripura, officials said.

The accident took place at a level crossing in Sindhu Kumar Para of Dhalai district, about 100 km east of Agartala, the capital city of Tripura.

Officials said the abrupt arrival of the pickup truck at the crossing led to a collision with the train.

"Today Agartala-Silchar Express train was passing through the hilly Ambasa-Manu section in Dhalai district when a goods-laden pickup truck suddenly entered the track. It collided with the train and resulted in the death of the truck driver along with two other occupants," Chief Public Relations Officer of the Northeast Frontier Railway, Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, told media.

According to officials, all three people in the pickup truck were killed on the spot.

Following the accident, officials immediately rushed fire and emergency service personnel to the spot to remove the bodies and take them to the hospital for post-mortem.

Sharma said the mangled vehicle was later cleared from the track, and the train resumed its onward journey.
