NEW DELHI, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- India on Friday announced the implementation of four new labor codes to modernize the country's labor governance.
The new codes will herald transformational change and were aimed at ensuring better wages, safety, social security and enhanced welfare for the country's workforce, according to the government.
India's federal ministry of labor and employment said in a statement that by modernizing labor regulations, enhancing workers' welfare and aligning the labor ecosystem with the evolving world of work, the move lays a foundation for a future-ready workforce and stronger, resilient industries driving labor reforms for self-reliant India.
The implementation of the codes marks the next major step in this trajectory, further widening the social-security net and embedding portability of benefits across states and sectors, the ministry said.
"With expanded social security, stronger protections and nationwide portability of entitlements, the codes place workers, especially women, youth, unorganized, gig and migrant workers, firmly at the center of labor governance," the ministry said.
"By reducing compliance burden and enabling flexible, modern work arrangements, the codes boost employment, skilling and industry growth, reaffirming the government's commitment to a pro-worker, pro-women, pro-youth and pro-employment labor ecosystem," it said. ■
