BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Brunei's tourism industry roadmap outlines the nation's ambition to develop a high-value, niche tourism sector that emphasizes quality over quantity while protecting the country's pristine natural environment, a senior Brunei tourism official said on Tuesday.
Speaking at the UN Tourism Regional Workshop on Measuring Sustainability of Tourism in Asia and the Pacific here, Salinah Mohd Salleh, acting-director of the Brunei Tourism Development Department, said the roadmap also seeks to uphold the nation's cultural values and ensure that tourism-generated economic benefits flow directly to local communities.
She said Brunei also recognizes that building this measurement capacity takes time, resources, and collaboration.
That is why the workshop is so valuable in building technical skills, institutional frameworks, and sharing the understanding needed to make sustainability measurement both practical and impactful.
The event brought together over 60 participants, including international experts, local stakeholders from government, private sector, higher education institutions, tourism service providers, and local communities. ■
