TRIPOLI, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Gunfire rattled the town of Werchfana, about 35 km southwest of Tripoli, from Sunday night into early Monday after violent clashes erupted between rival armed groups.
The fighting pitted Brigade 55 against forces from pro-government Brigade 111. Residents reported exchanges of fire in residential areas, raising fears among civilians and disrupting traffic on nearby roads.
Authorities have not issued any statements on the cause of the escalation.
Several local sources said the confrontation began when Brigade 55 launched an assault on a security post run by Brigade 111.
Officials have not released information on casualties from the violence. ■
