SEOUL, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- South Korean students on Thursday took an annual college entrance exam, seen as highly important in an education-obsessed society.

The College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT), which started at 8:40 a.m. local time, was set to run through 5:45 p.m. at 1,310 test sites nationwide, according to the Ministry of Education.

The CSAT consists of five sections, including Korean language, mathematics, English, Korean history, natural and social sciences, and the second foreign language and Chinese characters.

A total of 554,174 high school students and graduates registered for the single-day five-session test this year, up 6.0 percent compared to the previous year.

The test is believed to determine students' course of life and future profession in the Asian country, where graduating from a prestigious university is crucial to obtaining a decent job.

The government took measures to control traffic and reschedule the morning rush hour to help students arrive on time at the test sites.
