Teen driver detained after crash killing 2 in Poland

WARSAW, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Polish police have detained a 17-year-old boy who crashed a car into a tree in Kurowo, northern Poland, killing two teenage girls aged 16 and 17, local media reported Wednesday.

The accident occurred around 2:30 a.m. local time (0130 GMT) on Tuesday in Kurowo, Pomeranian Voivodeship. The police said the teenager was driving without a license and using his mother's car without her consent. For unknown reasons, he veered off the road and hit a roadside tree, killing the two teen passengers.

The driver suffered a hand injury and was taken to hospital before being detained. Blood tests are underway to determine whether he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Under Polish law, individuals aged 17 and above can be tried as adults for criminal offenses.The suspect is expected to face questioning at the District Prosecutor's Office in Wejherowo.
