KABUL, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Afghan border forces have arrested more than 1,600 individuals in western Herat and Farah provinces along the border with Iran over attempts to illegally sneak into the neighboring country, the national army corps in the region said in a statement on Wednesday.
The arrested persons have been detained from various border districts of the provinces in the past month, the statement added without providing more details.
Simultaneously, a total of 1,492 Afghan refugee families, totaling 9,391 individuals, returned to Afghanistan from the neighboring Iran and Pakistan on Tuesday, Afghanistan's High Commission for Addressing Returnees Problems said Wednesday.
The Afghan government has intensified efforts to curb human trafficking and prevent illegal border crossings into neighboring countries. ■
