CANBERRA, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- Life expectancy in Australia was unchanged in 2024 following declines in 2022 and 2023, according to official data released on Tuesday.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) said that life expectancy was 81.1 years for males and 85.1 years for females born between 2022-2024, matching the figures for the previous three-year rolling period from 2021-2023.
It follows declines in life expectancy for both males and females in the 2020-22 and 2021-23 periods, which marked the first recorded decreases since the mid-1990s.
Life expectancy at birth for Australians hit record-highs of 85.4 years for females and 81.3 years for males over the 2019-2021 period.
Despite the declines in 2022 and 2023, which the ABS attributed to high levels of excess mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic, Australia's life expectancy has increased by 3.7 years for males and 2.5 years for females since the 2000-2002 period.
The ABS said that Australia's life expectancy for all persons ranked 10th among Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development member states in 2023. ■
