LJUBLJANA, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- Slovenia plans to launch a temporary weapons amnesty allowing citizens to surrender illegal firearms without penalty, Prime Minister Robert Golob announced Monday.
The measure, aimed at strengthening national security, follows a deadly October attack in Novo Mesto that sparked public outrage and political fallout, including the resignation of two ministers.
The government will soon consider legislation enabling voluntary surrender of illegal weapons before stricter enforcement begins. Authorities have also reinforced police presence in the southeast and deployed army units to support border operations.
The move comes amid rising concern over illegal firearms after several shooting incidents near Roma settlements. The planned amnesty, the first since 2009, will coincide with new legislation expanding police powers and promoting Roma community integration. ■
