LONDON, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Emergency services have been sent to the scene of a rail derailment in Cumbria in northwestern England, which has affected rail services, local media reported on Monday.

"Following reports of a train derailment near Shap in Cumbria, the trust has dispatched resources to the scene," said the North West Ambulance Service.

"We are currently assessing the situation and working with other members of the emergency services. Our priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible," it said.

The gravity of the situation and the number of casualties remain unclear. According to National Rail, major disruption in parts of its rail service is expected to continue until the end of the day.
