COLOMBO, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu on Monday announced a substantial increase in defense spending and infrastructure investment from the 2026 budget.
Muizzu made the announcement during a Victory Day ceremony, according to the Maldivian state media PSM News.
The president said the government has allocated 181.56 million U.S. dollars to defense-related programs for 2026, adding that the defense sector has received special priority over the past two years, with renewed focus on both physical infrastructure and human capital development.
A key element of this investment is the rehabilitation of facilities used by the Maldives National Defense Force and the Maldives Police Service, he said.
In parallel with physical upgrades, the government is expanding its investment in youth engagement through the Maldives National Service program. Beginning next year, the initiative will offer placements to 1,000 young people annually. ■
