ANKARA, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- Türkiye said on Thursday that discussions were ongoing with Qatar and Oman to purchase additional Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets, following a major deal signed with Britain earlier this week to acquire 20 new aircraft.

"Work is also continuing on the procurement of Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft from Qatar and Oman to meet the operational requirements of our Air Force Command," Turkish Defense Ministry spokesperson Zeki Akturk said at a weekly press briefing.

On Monday, Türkiye signed a deal to buy 20 new Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets from Britain for 8 billion pounds (10.64 billion U.S. dollars), as Ankara seeks to bolster its defense capabilities amid a turbulent regional landscape.

The deal followed Germany's reported decision to lift its longstanding opposition to the sale of the jets to Türkiye.

Last week, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan toured three Gulf nations and held talks on the potential acquisition of used Typhoons from Qatar and Oman.

Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler has announced that the country plans to purchase a total of 44 Eurofighter Typhoon jets -- 12 from Qatar, 12 from Oman, and 20 from Britain -- with deliveries expected to begin early next year.
