KABUL, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- A total of 300 individuals who had been struggling with drug addiction have made a full recovery and rejoined their families in Herat province, western Afghanistan, a local official said on Wednesday.
The recovered addicts underwent a three-month medical treatment and rehabilitation program before reintegrating into their families, said Mawlawi Hayatullah Rouhani, provincial director of counter-narcotic directorate.
Over the past week, an additional 290 drug addicts were gathered and transferred to a rehabilitation center for treatment in Herat, Rouhani said.
The Afghan government has banned poppy cultivation and narcotics trafficking as part of a comprehensive initiative to eradicate drug abuse. ■
