KANDAL, Cambodia, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia's national flag carrier, Air Cambodia, on Sunday launched a new flight route from the capital Phnom Penh to Japan's Tokyo, with a stopover in China's Fuzhou City.

Speaking at the launch event held at the Techo International Airport here, Mao Havannall, minister in charge of Cambodia's State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, said direct flights between Phnom Penh and Tokyo had been halted since the COVID-19 pandemic era.

"The launch of scheduled flights between Cambodia and Japan via Fuzhou City marks a new milestone in Cambodia's air network expansion," he said.

Air Cambodia said it will operate three flights per week between the two destinations every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.

According to Havannall, a total of 33 domestic and international airlines have so far operated flights connecting Cambodia with eight ASEAN member states, as well as China, South Korea, Japan, Qatar, India, and the United Arab Emirates, among others.

He said the Southeast Asian country's three international airports accommodate a total of 47,637 flights, with 5.1 million international passengers during the January-September period of 2025.
