COLOMBO, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's cabinet has approved a proposal to declare a "Sri Lankan Day" on Dec. 12-14 this year, in an attempt to promote national unity and raise awareness amongst citizens, said a spokesman on Wednesday.

Cabinet spokesman and Minister of Health and Mass Media Nalinda Jayatissa told a press briefing that the event will take place across several key areas in Colombo, including Colombo Town Hall and Viharamahadevi Park.

"The event will be organized across four main zones, with participation from both the private and public sectors. All provinces will be represented through their displays of regional culture," said Jayatissa.

The three-day event will entail various cultural performances and shows, food fairs and stalls, displaying traditions and cultures of all ethnic and religious communities, said Jayatissa, adding that it will serve as a platform to strengthen national reconciliation and understanding amongst communities.
