AMMAN, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Jordan's Anti-Narcotics Department has seized large quantities of illegal drugs and arrested 12 suspects in a series of operations across the country, the Public Security Directorate (PSD) said Monday.
According to a PSD statement published on Facebook, the operations led to the confiscation of 85,000 narcotic pills and 119 blocks of hashish, as part of the kingdom's ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and smuggling.
One of the key operations occurred at the Jaber border crossing connecting Jordan with Syria, during which the officers, in coordination with customs and security agencies, thwarted an attempt to smuggle 85,000 narcotic pills into Jordan. The suspect was later found to have concealed 13 blocks of hashish at his residence, read the statement.
In the southern part of Amman, security forces arrested three individuals, including a supplier, and seized 15 blocks of hashish. Another three dealers were detained elsewhere in the capital with nine blocks in their possession.
In Jerash Governorate, authorities detained a trafficker and his accomplice during a drug transport, seizing 40 hashish blocks. In Zarqa, another dealer was apprehended with six blocks, and in Aqaba, law enforcement detained one trafficker and recovered 36 blocks hidden in a rugged rocky area, according to the statement. ■
