FORDE, Norway, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- With all six successful lifts, Turkish veteran Muhammed Furkan Ozbek set a world record in the men's 65kg category with a total lift of 324 kilograms at the IWF World Weightlifting Championships on Saturday.
Ozbek, who placed fourth in the men's 73kg category at the 2024 Paris Olympics, adopted a stable strategy by increasing his weights by no more than 3kg per attempt. He secured the win with a snatch of 145kg and a clean and jerk of 179kg.
Pak Myong Jin of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) took second place with 135kg in snatch, 180kg in clean and jerk, and 315kg overall. Hampton Morris of the United States took the bronze with 311kg (133-178) after failing on two attempts to break the world record.
In the snatch segment, Bulgaria's Ivan Petkov Dimov and 36-year-old Eko Yuli Irawan of Indonesia both lifted 137kg to share the silver medals.
DPRK's Kim II Gyong dominated the women's 58kg category, sweeping three gold medals with 104kg in snatch, 132kg in clean and jerk, and a world record total of 236kg.
Rafiatu Lawal of Nigeria became Africa's first medal winner at these championships by finishing second with 229kg (101-128). Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion Kuo Hsing-chun of Chinese Taipei took third place with a total of 224kg. China's Long Tanzhen ranked fourth with 220kg (96-124).
A total of 477 lifters from 87 countries and regions are competing at the World Championships in Forde. The women's 63kg and men's 71kg competitions are scheduled for Sunday. ■
