FORDE, Norway, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Ri Song Gum of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea emerged as the biggest winner on the opening day of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championships, breaking the women's 48kg world records on total and in clean and jerk to claim three gold medals on Thursday.

Before a full house of 1,700 spectators at Fordehuset, Ri dominated the A Group by setting new world records in her final two clean and jerk attempts, lifting 120kg and 122kg respectively.

The 27-year-old posted results of 91kg in snatch, 122kg in clean and jerk, and a total of 213kg, sweeping the gold medals. India's Mirabai Chanu, silver medalist at the 2020 Olympics, came in second with lifts of 84-115-199, and Thailand's Thanyathon Sukcharoen, world champion in 2021 and 2022, was third on 88-110-198.

China's Li Shumiao earned a bronze medal in clean and jerk with 111kg and finished fourth overall with a total of 191kg, while compatriot Zhu Qiulian placed fifth in total on 83-105-188.

The women's 53kg and men's 60kg categories are scheduled on Friday.

Held from October 2 to 11, the championships mark the first global competition since new weight categories were introduced in June.
