SUVA, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Cybercrime is escalating in Fiji as law enforcement struggles to keep pace with a surge in digital exposure across the Pacific nation with a population of just around 900,000 people.
Salote Lutunauga, police liaison officer at the Online Safety Commission, said that more than 544,000 Fijians are now active on social media.
She warned that this rapid digital uptake is creating greater risks of cyberattacks, scams, and online fraud, the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation news website reported on Thursday.
Lutunauga cautioned that artificial intelligence-driven attacks are emerging as a serious threat and noted that even well-educated users often lack the skills to protect themselves online.
To address this, community officers are now being trained to raise awareness and provide basic digital safety guidance at the grassroots level, she added.
Online Safety Commission Commissioner Filipe Batiwale stressed the urgency of strengthening Fiji's cyber defenses.
He said the commission is leading a comprehensive review of the country's Online Safety Act, which draws on international best practices and aims to secure new legal powers to combat rapidly evolving cyber threats. ■
