BISHKEK, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Members of the Kyrgyz Parliament (Jogorku Kenesh) decided to dissolve the legislature on Thursday.
"At the Sept. 25 meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh, deputies reviewed and adopted a draft resolution 'On the self-dissolution of the 7th convocation of the Jogorku Kenesh,'" reported the Parliament's press service.
The draft resolution was introduced by Member of Parliament Ulan Primov, representing an initiative group of 32 lawmakers.
"The interval between two important political events -- presidential and parliamentary elections -- is a short period of time; therefore, in order to strengthen the political system and stability in the country, the initiative group proposes that the parliament voluntarily relinquish its powers," he said.
The proposal received strong support, with 84 deputies voting in favor.
Local media reported that Kyrgyz Parliament Speaker Nurlanbek Turgunbek uulu said Thursday that, in line with all procedures, early parliamentary elections of the country's Parliament should be held on Nov. 30 this year.
According to the Kyrgyz Constitution, the Jogorku Kenesh is a unicameral legislature of 90 members with a five-year term. Under the original schedule, the parliamentary election was set for November 2026 and the presidential election for January 2027. ■
