NEW DELHI, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- At least five persons died from electrocution amid heavy rains in Kolkata, the capital city of India's eastern state of West Bengal, during the past 24 hours, confirmed a local police over the phone on Tuesday.
The heavy rainfall has severely impacted daily life in Kolkata, leading to waterlogging on the city's roads and streets.
The take-off and landing of flights at Kolkata Airport have been disrupted.
The meteorological department said the heavy downpour was the result of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. ■
